International Day of Persons with Disabilities

International Day of Persons with Disabilities

December 3rd is a day to recognize individuals with disabilities and understand the importance and need for inclusive communities worldwide. This particular day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 47/3 on December 3rd of 1992.

At Solutions For Independence, we understand the importance of disability inclusion and advocacy, which is why we offer services and resources that allow people with significant disabilities to have equal opportunities and to live as independently as they desire. We offer a wide range of services to our consumers. Among these vital services include, but are not limited to:

  • Advocacy
  • Information and Referral
  • Independent Living Skills Training
  • Peer Support
  • Transitional Services (from facilities/institutions, diversion from institutionalization, and youth transition)

You can learn more about our services by clicking on the ‘Services’ tab located on our website.

People with disabilities are frequently excluded and overlooked, particularly during critical times much like the COVID-19 pandemic. It is critical that all individuals have equal access to resources, regardless of disability. Unfortunately, individuals with disabilities have the most difficulty gaining access to these critical services that they rely on to stay safe and secure during times of crisis. Something as simple as receiving a COVID-19 vaccine can be a difficult task for individuals living with a disability, which is why it is critical that the community as a whole, as well as legal entities, take action to ensure equal access to all resources.

Participating in physical activities is another important resource to which people with disabilities should have equal access. It is not only beneficial to one’s overall health, but it also allows people with  disabilities to try something new, learn a new skill, form new relationships, and have fun! Solutions For Independence is proud to play a role in ensuring that children and adults living with disabilities have access to adaptive sports such as tennis, cycling, archery, basketball, and more! To stay up to date on events that we have coming up, please click here or visit the tab labeled ‘Events’ on our website.

Solutions For Independence promotes and works towards building a more inclusive community so that people with significant disabilities can have equal opportunities, engage within their communities, and have equal access to critical services.
