At Solutions For Independence we strive to be your go to resource for all disability issues including housing, employment, transportation and legislation. Advocacy is a core service that is provided with consumers who may want to learn how to be self-advocates and understand their rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Advocacy involves both system and community changes as well as individual issues.

Self Advocacy

At Solutions For Independence, consumers can learn how to advocate for themselves. Self advocacy is defined as 'the action of representing oneself or one’s views or interests.’ We believe that individuals make better decisions and life choices when they are aware of their own rights and their own abilities. Consumers are encouraged to learn about themselves and their environment so they can have a positive impact in their lives.

Systems Advocacy

Systems Advocacy involves actively engaging and advocating on behalf of people with disabilities at a local, state, and federal level. Systems Advocacy can lead to changes in laws, policies and/or rules that govern our lives. Our team may concentrate on issues such as the following:

  • Accessible parking
  • Appeals for denial of services
  • Accessible and affordable housing
  • Transportation concerns
  • Disability Discrimination
  • Assistive technology
